I avoided it when it first came out, due to both my young age and the mediocre reviews it garnered. It’s a game that refuses to hold your hand, hardly explains any of the complicated systems in it, and can be soul-crushingly tough if the wrong decisions are made. Square chose to follow up its mega-smash with an esoteric, brutally uncompromising RPG that was unlike anything else on the market. Originally released after Final Fantasy VII blew up the charts, SaGa Frontier must have been quite the surprise for those unaware of its origins. Perhaps sensing there was still untapped potential, the series is being born anew with the release of SaGa Frontier Remastered. Akitoshia Kawazu’s cult series flourished in Japan but has struggled to find an audience here in North America. Smack dab in the middle of that was the PSX debut of the SaGa franchise.
From the iconic Final Fantasy releases to cult hits such as Parasite Eve and Brave Fencer Musashi, it seemed like top-notch titles were dropping every few months.

Both twins have different motivations this time around, and different outcomes to their story. While playing the twin’s case, you can either pick the Gift of Light to play as Blue or the Gift of Shadow to play as Rogue. SaGa Frontier Remastered adds some sort of third ending while playing the new Fuse scenario. This ending sees you play as Rogue, who retains all of Blue’s stats, but without weapon points and arts for swords, guns, and martial arts. To see Rouge seal Hell, on the other hand, you need to lose seven times to Rouge. To see Blue seal Hell, you need to defeat Rougue seven times before he defeats Blue once. Blueīlue’s story has two different endings, like in the original PlayStation release. Proceed normally through the dungeon to unlock this ending. Inside, you will fight yet another boss, save Gina and learn about Rastaban’s true plans. Defeat the powerful boss, check the window and then head back to the previous floor to access a new secret entrance. Once the cutscene has played, you will have to face an additional boss fight inside the top towers in Orlouge’s castle. The third ending is the one that differs the most from all the others, and to get it, you will need to head to the tailor shop in Rootville right before heading to the final dungeon to learn that Gina has been kidnapped. On the other hand, you can get the human ending by having no mystic skill equipped when talking to Rastaban. The first ending, which sees Asellus embrace her mystic origins, is unlocked by equipping Faeblade, Mystic Gloves, and Mystic Boots, have mystic skills in all three slots and only then talk to Rastaban in the final dungeon. Some of the storylines have multiple endings, and it can be difficult to unlock them all without knowing how to, as the conditions can be a little obscure, and the game doesn’t tell you outright that there are multiple endings to begin with. SaGa Frontier Remastered is an excellent role-playing game featuring some unique gameplay mechanics and multiple storylines to follow, but the game does not do a very good job at explaining all of its intricacies.
